It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Sabino “Junie” John, Jr., a devoted father, enthusiastic historian, and passionate political thinker.
Born on February 15, 1960, in Colón, Panama, Sabino was the eldest male, of five children of the late Phyllis Campbell and Sabino John, Sr. He was raised in Panama City, where his ability to read Latin and speak fluent Spanish and English helped him develop a lifelong love of learning, studying economics, languages, and history.
An avid traveler, Sabino spent extended periods in Spain, El Salvador, and Russia, experiences that enriched his global perspective. In the late 1980s, he immigrated to the United States, where he proudly became a U.S. citizen. It was in the U.S. that he met and married Sherry Tate, and together they welcomed two children: Sofia Simone Campbell and Sabino-Edward Saint.
Sabino was an entrepreneur at heart. In addition to teaching, he built a business creating natural skin and hair oils, all-purpose cleaners, and art-inspired clothing. In 2010, he was awarded a copyright for his distinctive design, Art is Life, reflecting his deep belief in the transformative power of creativity.
A man of conviction, Sabino was passionate about politics and social justice. He frequently wrote and lectured on innovative political ideas, always eager to engage others in thoughtful discussion. Sabino also loved spending time with his children, reading about Latin American history, and watching classic black-and-white films.
He is survived by his beloved children, Sofia John and Sabino-Edward Saint John; his former wife, Sherry Tate John; his siblings: Vielka Davenport, Ana John Angobo, Deborah John, Marcelino John, and his nieces: Kenisha Jordan, Danieyiel Davenport, Brittany John, Katrina Sullivan and nephew Matthew John.
Sabino will be fondly remembered for his playfulness, intellectual curiosity, and unwavering tenacity. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
