Charles Robert Burgess, known to most as Chuck, passed away of natural causes on May 25, 2025, in Canyon Country, California, at the age of 79.

Chuck was born on August 1, 1945, in Los Angeles, at a hospital called the Stork’s Nest, to Audrey and Everett Burgess. Within eight years, he welcomed four brothers — Benjamin, Danny, Gary, and Wayne.

He met Carolyn Davenport at Calvary Chapel in Reseda, California. They were married on October 21, 1966, in Van Nuys. They loved to travel, play games, and spend time with friends and family. Together they raised three children: Jeffrey, Mark, and Bethany, and Chuck’s greatest joy was always being with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandson.

Chuck was a man of many skills and strong work ethic. Over the years, he worked as a gardener, truck driver, and a cook and manager at IHOP as a teenager. He served at Kaiser Hospital as an orderly and later as supervisor of Environmental Services, all while running his own janitorial business and working as a general handyman. His favorite job was with Best Locks, changing locks at the Zoo, Airport, and prisons. Even after retirement, he continued to serve — cooking for little ones at a preschool, where the children always looked forward to seeing “Papa Chuck.” He was always the one to help someone else.

Chuck loved to fish, hunt, camp, and spend time in antique shops collecting quirky items — from license plates and rubber ducks to eagles, bolos, and old keys. He enjoyed card games, Gunsmoke and The Rifleman, and had a deep appreciation for good food and sweets. He loved to gather with family and friends and made everyone feel welcome.

Above all, Chuck loved the Lord with all his heart. He was devoted to his church and music, especially the Gaithers, and was a prayer warrior who faithfully prayed for others.

Chuck is survived by his beloved wife, Carolyn Burgess, and their children: Jeffrey Burgess (wife Jaime), Mark Burgess (wife Jennifer), and Bethany Bauman.

He is also survived by his ten grandchildren: Micah Burgess, Alyssa Bauman, Sophia Burgess, Brooklyn Burgess, Emily Bauman, Giovanni Torres, Madison Burgess, Reagan Burgess, Spencer Burgess, and Bailey Torres; his great-grandson, Titus Ramsey; and his brother, Benjamin Burgess.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Audrey and Everett, and his brothers Danny, Gary, and Wayne.

Chuck will be remembered for his unwavering faith, his love for his family, his joyful spirit, and his servant’s heart. To know him was to be prayed for, cared for, and welcomed with open arms.

God saw he was getting tired
And a cure was not to be,
So He put His arms around him
And whispered, “Come with Me.”

In tears we watched him suffer
And saw him fade away.
Although we loved him dearly,
We could not make him stay.

A heart of gold stopped beating.
Hard working hands now rest.
God broke our hearts
To prove to us…
He only takes the best.
